The dvd home theater system did not come with a receiver/amplifier because the DVD player has the 3 red/3 white speaker cables on it. When I hook up the audio cables of the Ps2 directly to the speakers and the video cable to the tv, everything works, except the sound is way too loud and there is no way to adjust the volume. The only way it could work would be if there was a remote for the ps2 that could control volume for games. Could I connect an optical cable to the DVD player and connect the DVD player’s audio/video cables to the tv? Sorry if this is confusing and thanks in advance!

Connect video cables from PS2 to TV and optical or composite cables ( red & white ) from PS2 to Home Theater System for audio.
