If I buy an HD DVD player (let’s say a budget Toshiba A3), can it plug in to a home theater out of the box deal such as Philips DVD Home Theater System with iPod Dock – HTS3544 ? I want the sound from the Philips system but want the HD visual quality of the separate player. Looking for the best deal for surround sound and being able to play HD movies.

Yes. They will all allow you to route the audio through your home theater amplifier.
I assume by HD you mean Blu-Ray? The HD DVD format has been discontinued.
As long as Philips system has optical input.
